Lantern festivals like this are held in different parts of the world for different reasons. In Kamihinokinai Japan the Paper Balloon Festival marks the Lunar New Year. They are launched to bring good luck in the coming year. In China, they are meant to symbolize families coming together. No matter the reason I always find them beautiful. I would love to watch the lanterns float into the night sky in person one day.
