Winter has been harsh this year. In my part of the world, we have seen everything from massive 100-car pileups to prolonged subzero temperatures. In the world of Arknights, however, the return of winter carries a much heavier meaning.
The image above comes from a promotional campaign titled Arknights: Winter’s Return, which featured merchandise themed around the Perish in Frost narrative arc and the tragic character FrostNova. The campaign coincided with the release of the second season of the anime, Arknights: Perish in Frost, and captures the cold, desolate atmosphere the series is known for.
Whenever I see Arknights, it continues to fascinate me. The artwork is consistently stunning and the world itself feels rich and deliberately crafted. Sadly, I must confess that I still have not made the time to properly watch the anime, so I cannot say much more about Perish in Frost or FrostNova beyond their reputation. That said, I genuinely appreciate that Arknights is one of the few mobile games that does not rely on overt fanservice for publicity, instead letting its art direction and storytelling speak for themselves.
Even so, its kemonomimi designs fit right in with a wintery Cat[girl]urday. One of these days, I really do need to sit down and finally watch the anime.
