I have been feeling nostalgic lately and thinking about catgirls from anime series from the past. This includes anime I did not watch a lot of, like UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie. I remember GIFs and images from it circulated around the internet back in the 2000s, and I watched a few episodes. Sadly, when I recently tried to watch all of it, I found the series as a whole did not pass the test of time.
UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie stars a young man named Kazuto Tokino who tries to take over his grandfather’s bathhouse. Unlike our reality, he lives in a world where aliens from space are not only known but common. Unfortunately for Kazuto, one alien crashes into the bathhouse, nearly killing him. Luckily, this alien named Valkyrie was able to save him with a kiss! This kiss, however, drains half her soul, creating a bond between them. This traps Valkyrie on Earth, and considering she is a princess, other aliens come looking for her…
One such Alien is Sanada, and yes, she is a catgirl maid. Not only is she a catgirl maid, but she is also the leader of a catgirl maid army! Just ignore the fact that she used a ray gun to hypnotize and turn normal girls into catgirls… In one of the best episodes in the series, the catgirl maid army fights a society of bespectacled maidens in an all-out catgirl vs girls with glasses war! It was epic!
Sadly, UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie doesn’t quite stand the test of time. The humor feels dated, the fanservice is very much of its era, and the story never really pulled me in on a full rewatch. Still, I can see why it left an impression back in the early 2000s. For fans of catgirls and girls with glasses, episode 1 of season 3 is worth a curiosity watch. As a whole, though, it’s probably best remembered as a product of its time rather than a must-watch today.
So what do you think?
