Reincarnated as a Sword Season 2 just debuted earlier this week on streaming services. The first episode starts strongly with a mysterious flashback told from the perspective of a child slave. For now, the identity of this person remains a mystery, and it is not clear how this flashback will tie into the main story. With that said, it instantly brought me back into the show.
Season one introduced us to a man who, as you might have guessed, was killed in a vehicle accident and reincarnated in another world. At this point, this is just what we expect from the crowded isekai genre. The twist, however, is that he is reincarnated as a sword who can’t fight on his own. He can kill monsters and gain skills, but he needs someone to wield him.
Enter Fran, a young catgirl who was sold into slavery after her parents were killed. She discovers the reincarnated sword, and the two form a strong father-daughter-like bond. She lovingly names the sword “Teacher,” and the two set off on a journey to make her a powerful warrior. Fran wants to become the first Black Cat in her world to evolve.
The flashback at the start of the episode reminds me of the darker side of this series. Fran’s world is cold, dark, and cruel. That being said, after the flashback, we are treated to some warm, light-hearted adventure. Fran and Teacher try to reach a flying island, only to discover that it is actually a dungeon guarded by powerful undead creatures. They meet a necromancer and team up to explore the island together.
It is a great way to start the season. We get ominous foreshadowing along with the cute father-daughter relationship that makes the series work. I cannot wait to see Fran continue to grow and hopefully evolve one day!
So what do you think?
