Yesterday was Juneteenth, a federal holiday in the United States that commemorates the end of slavery. The celebration traces its origins to Galveston, Texas, where news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people on June 19, 1865. That was more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. Since then, Juneteenth has grown into a nationwide celebration of freedom, resilience, and African American culture.
The influence of that culture can even be seen in anime. Bleach features music and aesthetics inspired by hip-hop, and it also introduced fans to one of anime’s most iconic catgirls: Yoruichi Shihouin. As a mentor to Ichigo Kurosaki, Yoruichi is as wise as she is strong. She is also one of the few prominent anime characters in whom many African American fans can see themselves represented. Her popularity has even reached outside the anime community, with Megan Thee Stallion famously cosplaying her.
There are many ways to celebrate Juneteenth, from public readings of historical documents to exhibitions highlighting African American history and culture. For many families, it is also a time to gather with friends and loved ones over a barbecue. If you get the chance this weekend, head to the beach and enjoy a cookout while reflecting on a day that marked an important step toward America living up to the ideals expressed in its Constitution.
So what do you think?
