I finally watched Trigger’s kemonomimi anime Brand New Animal. It is everything I love about Studio Trigger without being too familiar. It stars Michiru, a human who mysteriously turns into a beastman. She flees to Anima City to start a new life free of persecution. Anima City, however, is a very crazy place. Luckily for Michiru, she runs into a social worker named Ogami. This stone-cold wolf teams up with the naive tanuki to protect the city and discover why Michiru became a beastman.
For a while, I was worried the plot would be too predictable and that the story was missing depth. In the end, there were enough surprises to give BNA that extra oomph. It is not as dark as Beastars but not as family-friendly as Zootopia. Trigger fans will undoubtedly love it and considering how big their fan base is that should be good enough. That said I also think it has a wide appeal that both anime and non-anime fans will enjoy. If you have Netflix check it out!
So what do you think?
